More than 10.000 signatures asking for forgiveness for Shwe Nya Wah Sayadaw

Shwe Nya Wah Sayadaw told radio Free Asia today that he has collected over 10.000 signatures from monks and lay people yesterday and sent to the Maha Nayaka Sangha Council. The signatures are all in support of him, asking for forgiveness.
An order “Action to be taken on U Pyinnya Thiha, Abbot of Shwe Nya Wah” was issued by a group of monks of the Maha Nayaka Sangha Council. The Abbot Shwe Nya Wah Sayadaw was accused of giving a sermon at the Mandalay Headquarters of the National League for Democracy (NLD) on November 20, 2011, and hence to be evicted from his premises. He was cited under three breaches/offenses of insubordination as well including the order prohibiting preaching/rendering sermons in the premises of Shwe Nya Wah monastery.
The order was not issued by the Chairman of the Maha Nayaka Sangha Council, Abbot Bahmo Sayadaw. In a meeting Bahmo Sayadaw and Shwe Nya Wah Sayadaw discussed a possible solution for this situation.
Shwe Nya Wah Sayadaw has since apologized in a letter together with the 10.000 signatures. A confrontation which would lead to the exclusion of U Pyinnya Thiha Sayadaw and the closing of his monastery would most likely lead to protests by monks and lay people. New mass protests would create a very difficult situation in the country. So both sides are searching for a peaceful solution.
We know that the Maha Nayaka Sangha Council is controlled by the regime, even though not all monks of the council might agree with it. Since the election of a new Chairman the climate has changed a little. The new president is strong and well respected.
The Maha Nayaka Sangha Council has not issued a replay yet.
