The Sangha will STRIKE back…. the Spirit of the Saffron Revolution continues…
By Anna Malindog

“The struggle continues until peace and democracy is restored in Burma. The 3rd of October marks the on going steps of this fight and a new wave of resistance against the military regime. As in 2007, this will be led by the monks and the Burmese people”

The 3rd of October 2009 marks the reinvigoration of the monks struggle against injustice, violence and oppressions against the military regime in Burma. This day once again rekindles the spirit of the Sangha in its pursuit of catalyzing and spreading the seeds and the wings of freedom and peace in Burma. Though the gathering of the monks inside Burma on this day was not as big in number compared to the 2007 Saffron Revolution, the 500 monks who staged a prayer rally in the Shwedagon Pagoda as an expression of their dissent against the military regime is already a starting point of the on-going unselfish, courageous and self sacrificing struggle of the monks’ persistent efforts to save the Burmese people from the claws and venom of the Burmese military regime. This is just the beginning…

To say that the regime was actually disturbed by the prayer rally of the 500 monks, by the 10 cities and 10 monasteries that boycotted the regime already since the 3rd of October, by the fact that the top general, Gen Than Shwe was denounced as part of the Buddhist community, is an understatement. Rangoon since the 3rd of October until now is still under tight security situation and is under red alert to prevent any possible protests or demonstrations from the monks who have been clamoring for two significant demands;

• The release of all monks and nuns who are still in prisons
• Public apology from the military regime of the different kinds and various atrocities and oppressions it overtly committed against the monks not only during the 2007 Saffron Revolution but the days after that and even at this very moment.

Riot police and probably other members of the military force have been deployed not only around the Shwedagon Pagoda but also in different parts of the country around different monasteries that has been suspected to be the venues and places where the gathering of the monks together with the support of the Burmese people might probably start.

All these overt actions of the military regime are indeed clear cut indications and obvious manifestations of the high level paranoia and fear they have on the possibilities of a 2nd Saffron Revolution. They are indeed trying to hide this and pacify the situation by sending a negotiator to talk Aung San Suu Kyi how tensions could be reduced. But such kind of insecurity and fear are like smokes which could not be contained however they might want to do so.

However and in whatever way the regime would want to hide this paranoia, this fear, and however they try to project to be secured and unaffected by the seemingly movement and efforts of the monks inside and outside of the country to express and show its discontent and frustrations on the unyielding stance and adamant character of the junta of not granting their demands and of continuously putting the whole country in critically dismal political and socio-economic condition, it is but undeniable that the regime is insecure and quite will probably be caught off guard if indeed another Saffron Revolution together with a people power revolution and a strategic support of the international community will come into pass in the coming days…maybe months.. who knows..?

The possibility of another big demonstration in Burma led by the Sangha is not a distant possibility. It might and probably will happen soon. But this time, the monks will not be alone in leading this peaceful revolution. This will be an inter-faith movement of different religious groups. It will be a movement of ordinary people such as the workers, the villagers and even of migrant workers coming from different border areas of Burma. This is a movement of the ordinary people coming from different sectors of the Burmese society. The monks are mobilizing inside and outside of the country. They are mobilizing their fellow monks, other religious groups and the local and general citizenry of Burma who are both living inside and outside of the country. They have their dream for their country and that is to free the Burmese people from the claws of an oppressive and injustice regime. They are continuously marching forward and will not stop until they achieve their most precious goal and that is to see their country and the Burmese people living in peace, freedom and in a democratic government. Indeed, the spirit of the 2007 Saffron Revolution is alive, not only in the hearts and spirits of the monks but much more in the hearts and minds of the Burmese people and its supporters.

Be inspired listening to a monk who is sacrificing his life for the plight of the Burmese people and for the freedom of his country”.
