Food and water donations at the rubbish dump

Food and water donations at the rubbish dump

About 300 migrants from Burma (which includes around 100 children of all ages) are currently living in dismal conditions on the rubbish dump of Mae Sot, a town on the Thai-Burmese border. The families fled arbitrary arrest, forced labor, rape, and killing by the Burmese military. They arrived at the border of Thailand with hopes of leading a life free of human rights abuses.
They earn a meager income by collecting and re-using plastic and other refuse. But living at the dump site comes with a very serious threat to health and security. The people face significant risks to their health, including skin, chronic respiratory diseases and sickness from drinking contaminated water from the near by lake and the well on the rubbish dump.
For this reason we have established the ‘Clean Water Fund’ to pay for the running costs of a water purification system for the people of the rubbish dump of Mae Sot. To date funds raised have enable us to purchase a filtration system, but this will require regular filter replacements if it is to remain effective.

LIFESAVER Gerry Can is an innovative water purification device that can remove debris, bacteria and viruses from water utilizing a unique membrane filtration system. With filtration, it effectively creates fresh water instantly and safely.
For us to be able to ensure the continued use of the Lifesaver Gerry Can, we are depending upon your help. The system will be bought and shipped, but the ongoing costs of the replacement filters that will be required about once a month will be 57.00 UK sterling.
